How to Make a Compound Sentence Simple
đ Did You Know:
- A compound sentence has two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (like and, but, or).Â
- A simple sentence has only one main clause.
đ How to Change a Compound Sentence into SimpleÂ
We can change compound sentences into simple sentences in four different ways:Â
- By using participles (V+ing / V+ed forms),
- By using gerunds (V+ing),
- By using infinitives (to + verb),
- By using phrases instead of full clauses.
Compound Sentences with âbutâ â (Simple using âIn spite of + gerundâ)

- Compound: He was very poor but honest.Â
- Simple: In spite of being very poor, he was honest.

- The first clause is changed into âIn spite of + verb + ingâ to show contrast (In spite of being very poor).

- Compound: He caught the thief but didnât punish him.Â
- Simple: In spite of catching the thief, he didnât punish him.

- The first clause is changed into âIn spite of + verb + ingâ to show contrast (In spite of catching the thief).
