Assertive to Interrogative

An assertive sentence makes a statement (positive or negative), while an interrogative sentence asks a question. To convert an assertive sentence into an interrogative without changing its meaning, we often reverse its structure or introduce auxiliary verbs (do, does, did, is, are, has, have, etc.).

✅ General Rules:

  • If the sentence is affirmative, make a negative question.
  • If the sentence is negative, make a positive question.
  • Use the auxiliary verb first, followed by the subject.
  • If the sentence has no auxiliary or be verb, use do/does/did in the interrogative form.

Examples with Rules Applied:

1. Affirmative Sentences with Auxiliary or Be Verbs

👉 Begin with a negative question (isn’t, wasn’t, can’t, etc.)

  • Assertive: He is a rich man.
  • Interrogative: Isn’t he a rich man?

2.

  • Assertive: A tiger can see in the dark.
  • Interrogative: Can’t a tiger see in the dark?

2. Negative Sentences with Auxiliary or Be Verbs

👉Drop the negative word and form a positive question.

1. 

  • Assertive: He has not done this.
  • Interrogative: Has he done this?

2.

  • Assertive: I can never do it.
  • Interrogative: Can I ever do it?

3. Affirmative Sentences without Auxiliary/Be Verbs

👉Add do/does/did in negative question form.

1.

  • Assertive: I know how to swim.
  • Interrogative: Don’t I know how to swim?

2.

  • Assertive: She sings a melodious song.
  • Interrogative: Doesn’t she sing a melodious song?

Assertive Sentences without Auxiliary Verbs / Be Verbs

  4. It lies in every phase of our society. (Interrogative)
  5. We need to buy good books. (Interrogative)
  6. Suddenly I noticed a very nice deer. (Interrogative)
  7. Books contain noble thought of great men. (Interrogative)

4. Sentences with Indefinite Pronouns

👉Use one of two methods:

  • Start with "Who..."
  • Start with "Does anybody..."?

1.

  • Assertive: Everyone loves flowers.
  • Interrogative 1: Who doesn’t love flowers?
  • Interrogative 2: Doesn’t everyone love flowers?
  • Interrogative 3: Does anyone hate flowers?

2.

  • Assertive: Nobody can have faith in a liar.
  • Interrogative 1: Who can have faith in a liar?
  • Interrogative 2: Can anybody have faith in a liar?

5. Sentences Starting with "There is no..."

👉Change to: Is there any... ?

  • Assertive: There is no use of this book.
  • Interrogative: Is there any use of this book?
