One day, her father came home and said, “Laila, we found a good man for you. You will get married soon.”
Laila was shocked. She said, “But Baba, I am still a child. I want to study more.”
Her father said, “Girls don’t need much study. You will be happy after marriage.”
Laila was very sad. She cried, but no one listened to her. After one month, she got married. Her husband was much older than her.
After marriage, Laila could not go to school. She had to cook food, clean the house, and take care of the family. She worked all day and felt very tired. She missed her school and her friends.
After one year, Laila had a baby. But she was still a child. She did not know how to care for the baby. Her health became weak. She often felt sick and sad. She could not play or study anymore.
One day, Laila’s teacher came to visit her. The teacher was very sad. She said to Laila’s mother, “This is why early marriage is bad. Girls should stay in school. They should not marry early.”
Then the teacher talked to other parents in the village. She told them that early marriage is not good for girls. Slowly, people started to understand.
Laila’s story helped many people. Now, more girls in the village go to school and wait until they are older to marry.
