Affirmative to Negative

Can you turn an affirmative sentence into negative without changing the meaning? If you can, jump to the exercise section and test your learning. If not, first read the examples; then read the explanations below.

Level: Grades 6 to 8

1. How to Change

Look at these examples to see how an affirmative sentence is turned into negative without changing the meaning:
Affirmative: The coffee is hot.
Negative: The coffee is not cold.
Affirmative: The movie was interesting.
Negative: The movie was not boring.
Affirmative: She will arrive soon.
Negative: She will not depart soon.
Affirmative: The answer is correct.
Negative: The answer is not wrong.

Grammar Explanation:

If we want to make a sentence negative without changing its original meaning, we have to do two things:

  1. To add "not" &
  2. To use an "opposite word".

This is true for sentences with Be Verbs, sentences that have Auxiliary Verbs (e.g. They have done well. She is reading.) and sentences with Modal Verbs (can, will, should, might, etc.).

2. Present Simple and Past Simple

For other verbs in the present simple, we use the auxiliary verb do/does in the negative.
Affirmative: Our team looks confident.
Negative: Our team does not look unconfident.
Affirmative: They answer correctly.
Negative: They do not answer incorrectly.

We use the auxiliary verb did in the past simple

Affirmative: stood first.
Negative: did not stand last.

Affirmative: She opened the door.
Negative: She did not close the door.
