A Greedy Farmer and His Wonderful Goose

Short Version

Once there was a farmer. He had a wonderful goose. Every day, the goose laid one golden egg. The farmer took the egg to the market and sold it. He got a lot of money. Day by day, he became rich.

But the farmer was very greedy. He thought, “There may be many golden eggs inside the goose. Why should I wait for one egg every day?”

He wanted to get all the eggs at once. His wife told him not to kill the goose, but he did not listen to her.

One day, the farmer killed the goose and opened its body. But he found no golden eggs inside.

The farmer became very sad. Now he had no goose and no golden eggs. He understood his mistake, but it was too late.

Moral: Greed brings loss.

He began to think, “If the goose gives me one golden egg every day, there must be many golden eggs inside her. Why should I wait day after day? I can get all the eggs at once.”

His wife heard his plan and told him not to do anything foolish. She said, “Be patient. The goose gives us one golden egg every day. We already have more than enough.” But the farmer did not listen.

One day, he caught the goose and killed it. Then he opened its body, expecting to find many golden eggs. To his great shock, there was not a single golden egg inside.

The farmer understood his terrible mistake. His wonderful goose was dead, and there would be no more golden eggs. He had lost the source of his wealth because of greed.
