Uses and Abuses of Television

Science has discovered many wonderful things. Television is one most wonderful of them. It is the most popular mass media all over the world. It has brought about a remarkable change in our life. It has given friends to the friendless and companions to the lonely persons. It has now become a part and parcel of our day-to-day life.

The word ‘television’ comes from two Latin words ‘tele’ and ‘vision’. The word ‘tele’ means distance and ‘vision’ means to see. So, the word ‘television’ means seeing from distance. It is a wonderful device for sending pictures to distant places. It has now become a part of our day-to-day life.

Like all other inventions of science, television has also a long history. At first the German scientist, Paul Nepkov thought of sending picture to a distant place. He tried to invent a device that can do it. At last, he became successful to invent television. Later on, an English scientist John Beyard modernized it.

Television is the most modern means of communicating thoughts and ideas. We can hear the speeches of the famous persons of the world through it. It serves much more than a radio. It is like a stage where performers are seen and heard. It also gives us the news of national and international events.

Television is the most popular form of entertainment. After working hard all day, we sit before a television set and enjoy various programmes. We can enjoy drama, movie, dance, music, song and many other programmes. 

Television has educative value too. It teaches the illiterate and the students. It is used to remove illiteracy. We can see and watch and hear classes on various subjects. We can also enjoy debate and hear discussions on various topics. Besides, it arranges programmes for children, women and workers.

Television is also a popular medium for the lovers of games and sports. Now-a-days people need not to go to the stadium to enjoy a game. They sit before a television set and can enjoy football, cricket, tennis and other games and sports.

Television has made the world smaller. It has conquered time and distance. Now we do not need to go abroad. We can know the customs, traditions, dresses, fashions and culture of other nations through television. We can get social, political, cultural, economic and religious news of home and abroad staying at home.

But television has some demerits too. Sometimes, the young boys and girls neglect their studies and spend much time watching television. Besides, some TV channels show naked and violence movies. It pollutes the character of our young generation and makes them violent. Moreover, it brings foreign couture to our country and affects our own culture.

Television is the most important medium of our entertainment and information. It plays an important role in our day-to-day life. So, television programmes should be polished and refined.
