How to Form Questions

Forming questions is a very useful skill which you must know. 

Answer the following questions before you learn how to make questions.

Now read the following explanations to learn how questions are formed. 

Subject Verb Inversion
To make a question, we put the verb before the subject. This is true if the sentence has Be Verb, Modal Verb, or Auxiliary Verb. 

Assertive
Question
He is honest.
Is he honest?
I am ready.
Am I ready?
Birds can fly.
Can birds fly?
They have called you.
Have they called you?
We should work hard.
Should we work hard?

1. Change the following statements into yes/no questions. 
(a) It is raining now. 
(b) They are happy.
(c) They were tasty.
(d) The table has 4 legs.
(e) We shall overcome.
(f) You would like a cup of tea.
(g) Birds can fly in the sky.
(h) He might come. 
(i) He does not like mild. 
(j) I did not tell a lie. div>

Present Simple Question
If the sentence in in the present simple, we use 'Do' or 'Does' before the subject. Remember that the main verb after 'do', 'does' is always in its base form.
Assertive
Question
I go.
Do I go?
He goes.
Does he go?
We eat.
Do we eat?
She eats.
Does she eat?

2. Change the following statements into yes/no questions. 
(a) He teaches English. 
(b) She wakes up at 6 o'clock.
(c) I live near the school. 
(d) They go to school by bus.
(e) He watches T.V every night.


Past Simple Question
If the sentence is in the past simple, we write 'Did'. Remember that the main verb after 'do', 'does' or 'did' is always in its base form.

Assertive

I went.
Did I go?
She came.
Did she come?
We danced.
Did we dance?

3. Change the following statements into yes/no questions. 
(a) He died in 1994.
(b) Tania bought two pens.
(c) I live in Spain.
(d) She collects many stamps.
(e) A tailor makes clothes.


Yes/No Questions
Questions that begin with an auxiliary verb or be verb is called yes/no question because the answer is always 'Yes' or 'No'. 

Wh-questions
If there is a question word, it goes before the verb. This is called Wh-question because 8 of the 9 question words begin with wh-.
