Assertive to Imperative

Converting assertive sentences into imperative sentences involves changing the tone of the statement from expressing a fact or opinion to giving a command or making a request.

Foolish Assumptions

We make some inescapable assumptions about you and your knowledge, including the following:

  • ✦ You know what assertive sentences and imperative sentences are.
  • ✦ You can identify and locate the subject and finite verb in sentences.

Assertive to Imperative

Here's a guide on how to do this, along with examples:

Step 1. Identify the subject

Step 2. Remove the subject "you" and any auxiliary verb from the sentence. In imperative, use the base form of the verb.

Assertive: You should think before you leap.
Imperative: Think before you leap.

Assertive: You should never tell a lie.
Imperative: Never tell a lie.

If the subject is anything except “you”, write “Let + Objective form” of that subject.

Assertive: They want to watch television.
Imperative: Let them watch television.
Assertive: I eat rice.
Imperative: Let me eat rice.

Change the following sentences into imperative.

You should think before you leap.

You should not go out in cold weather.

You should not kill your time.

You should never tell a lie.
